This study is loosely based on the study More Like Jesus from Not Consumed.

Oh, how I long to be more like Jesus as I walk this journey here on earth. To do that, I need to know Jesus, to not only know all about Him, but to know Him and to spend time with Him. It is true that we become like those whom we are around.

When we have heard the story so many times, we sometimes forget the wonder of all that happened around Jesus coming to earth. Let’s read Luke 2:1-7 with fresh eyes.

“2 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed.

² (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)

³ And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.

⁴ And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)

⁵ To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

⁶ And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.

⁷ And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.”

What do you see here? It may appear to be a simple story of a young couple looking for a place to have their baby in the midst of the census and crowded city. Oh, there is so much more. This birth fulfilled prophecies of old and God’s promises. This baby is the Son of God, Jesus.

God did all of this for us to have relationship with Him. Through this, we get a glimpse of who God is, who Jesus is.

Think about this:

• What does Jesus’ coming tell you about God’s character? His love and power?
• What does Jesus’ coming tell you about Jesus? His love and power?
• What does this account tell you about God’s provision? How wisdom?
• What does this account tell you about God’s sovereignty over the nations?
• How do the lessons on God in this account help us know who God is and know Him more?
• How do the lessons show us how to trust today?

Oh, there are so many lessons in these few verses when we meditate on them. We can see God’s hand in Mary and Joseph’s life, in Jesus’ story. From this, we can see God’s hand in our own life.
