Daily Dose of Encouragement: Prayer, Part 28

Matthew 6:9-13

“9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

10 Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

11 Give us this day our daily bread.

12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.”

Forgiveness is a part of prayer.

“12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.”

Notice that Jesus says that we ask God to forgive our debts (sins, offenses) as we forgive the debts of others. There is much, much more in this passage than we can dig into in a short devotional, but let’s think about this aspect. It does not say to forgive when they have asked forgiveness, but simply to forgive us as we forgive our debtors. Verses 14-15 go on to say, “14 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: 15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”

Forgiveness is imperative. Ask God today to help you forgive others. Seek help from a trusted pastor or Christian counselor if you are struggling with forgiveness.

Part of prayer is definitely forgiving others so that God will forgive us.

Forgive.
