Rest is a four-letter word in my vocabulary.
I find it very difficult to rest. It seems as if I should be up and doing, being productive. While it is good to be productive, it is also good to rest. God taught us to rest by setting aside one day a week to rest. Rest can also mean resting in the Lord, trusting in the Lord. Both of these things bring peace.
A friend this weekend reminded me that rest if a good thing. Then, I saw this quote from Elisabeth Eliot, “REST is a weapon given to us by God. The enemy hates it because he wants you stressed and occupied.” Ouch. Not resting can actually be a tool to keep us from God.
“9 There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.
10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.
11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.”
And so, this week, we meditate on rest. What does it mean to rest? How does God want us to rest. It is definitely something to think about as we go throughout week whether that means you need to slow down a bit or trust in God.
