We are looking at Not Consumed Developing a Quiet Time. Today, we are digging into the G-R-O-W-S acronym from Days 2-7. I appreciate their simple and practical approach to our time with God. I encourage you to break this up through the week and not try to read it all in one day.
G – Good morning, God! What they talk about in the study is a brief good morning or a brief prayer. Greeting God helps us focus on Him and our relationship with Him. Psalm 143:8, “8 Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning; For in thee do I trust: Cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; For I lift up my soul unto thee.” The Holy Bible: King James Version, Electronic Edition of the 1900 Authorized Version. (Bellingham, WA: Logos Research Systems, Inc., 2009), Ps 143:8.
R – Read Scripture and Respond. Proverbs 13:20, “20 He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: But a companion of fools shall be destroyed.” The Holy Bible: King James Version, Electronic Edition of the 1900 Authorized Version. (Bellingham, WA: Logos Research Systems, Inc., 2009), Pr 13:20.
Reading Scripture and responding is our way of simply spending time with God. We listen as He speaks to us and then respond to Him. This is about “hanging out” with God, getting to know Him and develop a relationship with Him. Lamentations 3:21-23 tells us how much He loves us. “21 This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. 22 It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. 23 They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” The Holy Bible: King James Version, Electronic Edition of the 1900 Authorized Version. (Bellingham, WA: Logos Research Systems, Inc., 2009), La 3:21–23.
O – Open Heart Prayer. When we pray and talk to God, we need to have an open heart to Him. We need to let God do “open heart surgery” on our hearts, letting Him work on our hearts, revealing what needs to change and helping us change it.
Psalm 139:23-24, “23 Search me, O God, and know my heart: Try me, and know my thoughts: 24 And see if there be any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting.” The Holy Bible: King James Version, Electronic Edition of the 1900 Authorized Version. (Bellingham, WA: Logos Research Systems, Inc., 2009), Ps 139:23–24.
Our hearts are wicked according to Jeremiah 17:9. “9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” The Holy Bible: King James Version, Electronic Edition of the 1900 Authorized Version. (Bellingham, WA: Logos Research Systems, Inc., 2009), Je 17:9.
W – Worship. God is our greatest need. When Jesus visited Mary and Martha, Mary worshipped at Jesus feet. Martha was busy serving. Who did Jesus say had the better part? Luke 10:41-42, “41 And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: 42 But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.” The Holy Bible: King James Version, Electronic Edition of the 1900 Authorized Version. (Bellingham, WA: Logos Research Systems, Inc., 2009), Lk 10:41–42.
We need to choose the good part and worship Him! Colossians 1:16 says that we are made for Him. “16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:” The Holy Bible: King James Version, Electronic Edition of the 1900 Authorized Version. (Bellingham, WA: Logos Research Systems, Inc., 2009), Col 1:16. Our whole lives are to be a worship to Him.
Consider how Jesus resisted temptation in Matthew 4.
Hiding His Word in our heart is important. Experience has taught me that it comes back to help us when we need it most.
All of these things working together help us have a more meaningful relationship with God and help us grow in our spiritual walk with Him. I hope they have been a help to you. (Ephesians 4:20-21; Romans 12:1-2)
Next week, we will be looking at the reasons we have a Quiet Time with God.
