Christ gives us a new identity when we come to know Him as Savior. A quote from Eric Geiger in the third video in the series sums it up. “We don’t achieve a new identity, we receive a new identity.”

After we come to know Jesus as Savior, we begin the process of becoming more like Him through sanctification. Knowing God more comes from increasing our relationship with Him and getting to know Him better. Then, we know ourselves more from God’s perspective.

Shirer gives you three verses to look up to see how God calls us to evaluate where we are in our relationship with Him.

1. Lamentations 3:40 – “⁴⁰ Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to the Lord.”
2. 2 Corinthians 13:5 – “⁵ Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?”
3. Galatians 6:4 – “⁴ But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another.”

Please note that these verses are not talking of doing anything more for salvation. Our salvation is paid by Jesus. These are talking about examining your life to increase your walk with God. Colossians 2:14 reads, “¹⁴ Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;” Jesus paid it all. The change to become more like Jesus comes as we grow in Christ.
