“9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
10 Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.”
Today, we are looking at “Give us this day our daily bread.”
Several things stand out to me:
- Jesus says to ask God for the provision. It is so important to remember that all provision – financial, emotional, spiritual, and health comes from God. God may use people to help provide, He is ultimately the Provider. Jesus says to ask Him for our daily sustenance. God is the sustainer.
- This truth hit me as the winter can bring the blahs and the loneliness can become overwhelming. God is where I need to go for any lack, in any way.
- I learned of needs this week, financial needs, that I can do nothing about. Yet, I can pray for God to provide knowing that He will. God is amazing!
- Some of you are going through difficult and challenging treatment. It breaks my heart. God will be there with you to provide comfort. He is our Provider.
- The provision comes daily, not monthly or annually. God provides for today.
- I am a planner. (My family are all resoundingly agreeing.) I want to know when, where, what, and how provision will be handled for the long-term. God provides daily.
- God will give us what we need for that day. I had the privilege of going through Hurricane Ivan in Florida which was pretty devastating. We were without power, water, sanitation, any food other than what we had prepped ahead, and some were without homes. Yet, God met our needs daily. When the National Guard came in, we lived on MRE’s. God provided!
- He provides what we need, our daily bread. It may not be our wants (which often are not good for us anyway), but for our needs. I grew up in a large family with my dad pastoring a small church. There were so, so many times that we were on our knees praying for food. One time, God provided cases of Wheaties, just when we needed it. For weeks, we had Wheaties for breakfast, snacks, and sometimes supper as well. Years later, my dad, who loved Wheaties, brought some home. We kids all groaned. It is a fun memory. However, it shows God’s provision. He gave us our daily bread!
