Luke 3

We see great humility in this chapter.

A new character comes on scene in this chapter, John the Baptist, son of Elisabeth and Zacharias. Well, we have already seen Him in Luke 2 as he leaped in Elisabeth’s womb when Mary went to visit her.

John the Baptist was very different from those around him. He was in the wilderness just as the Scriptures had prophesied of old (Isaiah 40:3). His purpose was to prepare the way of the Lord. He called for the people to repent and baptized those who did.

The people even thought that he may be the Messiah, but he quickly put those rumors to rest. Listen to what John says in verses 16 -17, “¹⁶ John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire: ¹⁷ Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.” He was not even worthy to untie Jesus’ shoes. He knew who Jesus was. 

John knew that he was there to point people to Jesus. Yet, he remained humble and lifted Jesus high.

May we lift Jesus high!
