Tuesday Tip: Holiday Thriving

The holidays are upon us. While we enjoy them, they can also be difficult for those of us who are chronically ill, disabled, isolated, and care-givers. The past few years of my being home-bound have brought challenges with the holidays. Our limitations seem to shine during the holidays.

How can we thrive over the holidays? Here are some things that have helped me thrive instead of just survive the holidays:

  1. Accept that the holidays look different than in the past.
  2. Prioritize both activities and gifts. We have more limitations than before.
  3. Start early. Prepare as much as you can beforehand. For instance (don’t laugh), I start Christmas cards in September. It takes me a long time.
  4. Focus on God; focus on others. Spend extra time with God. Reach out to those who may be hurting this year.
  5.  Be flexible. Yes, I have experienced the disappointment of missing family time due to being in the hospital. It hurts. These conditions continue to teach me to hold plans and abilities very loosely.Realize that plans are going to change, not may change, but going to change.
  6. For those with specific diets, offer to bring your own food to gatherings. Our needs can be complex. “Contamination” can cause significant issues, but making sure all is safe is hard for us, let alone for someone who is not used to it. Bringing your own can mitigate issues. Or, go over all ingredients and cross-contamination guidelines first. It may mean less stress for everyone.
  7. If needed, explain limitations to family/friends prior to the holidays, suggesting alternative ideas as needed.
  8. Plan recovery time. Then, add a day or two more than what you think you will need.

These are some general things that I have found have helped. What about you? What tips do you have for thriving through the holidays?
