Winter is coming.
Winter is long for many who are isolated and home-bound as the weather and flu-season force us to stay inside even more than normal.
Why am I mentioning this now in October? Because we need to prepare.
My first two winters after my intense isolation began a couple years ago were rough to put it mildly. Everyone else is busier during that time of year. Yet, we are stuck inside. The holidays are hard. It is dark later in the morning and earlier in the evening.
By the third winter, I knew I needed to take action. My preparation included extra projects I could do, Bible studies to do, and reaching out to a support network to let them know my need. (Reaching out for help was likely the hardest thing to do.)
Definitely make whatever preparations will help you. Then, do something very, very important daily or hourly or whatever you need to do. Remember. “Remember?, ” you ask. Yes, remember.
Look at Psalm 18. Maybe read it aloud again. Notice verses 30-33.
“30 As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the Lord is tried: he is a buckler to all those that trust in him. 31 For who is God save the Lord? or who is a rock save our God? 32 It is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect. 33 He maketh my feet like hinds’ feet, and setteth me upon my high places.”
God will see us through the upcoming winter! In addition to remembering Him, here are some ideas of ways to prepare:
- Obtain supplies to work on your Prayer Bible. If you prefer an electronic version, the Verse Locker app allows you to make collections which can be used for the various subjects to pray.
- Plan several projects of hobbies that you like.
- “Adopt” a missionary family or another shut-in to contact throughout the winter, building relationship.
- Develop a support network. We at Home Connections would be happy to assist with this. You may contact us in the comments or through our Facebook Group.
- Write down several Bible study topics or books that you would like to study more.
- Write out and post Scriptures throughout the house that will remind you of God, His love, and His attributes. It will keep your mind focused on Him. (Remember!)
What ideas do you have? What things have you found helpful? We would love to hear from you.
