One thing that I learn repeatedly in this life with disability is depending on God. I cannot. He can. In disappointment, He is enough. When overwhelmed, He is sufficient. God is dependable.
He can. Psalm 73:26, KJV: “26 My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.” Some days I have no strength for what comes. God has the strength! He will sustain. He will provide. Sometimes it is through a time of rest; sometimes putting one foot in front of the other all day and finding the strength is there.
He is enough in disappointment if I focus my eyes on Him. Proverbs 16:9, KJV: “9 A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the Lord directeth his steps.” Proverbs 19:21, KJV: “21 There are many devices in a man’s heart; nevertheless the counsel of the Lord, that shall stand.” I am a planner by nature. Some of this is of necessity given medical needs. Some of this is simply the way God created me. One of the hardest things I continually have to adapt to with my current health needs is that plans, even long made plans, often have to be set aside the last minute due to non-lung-friendly weather, germs, or illness flares. It truly has taught me that God is the One who directs our steps. Looking to Him in it, holding plans loosely, has helped. The disappointment isn’t easy, but finding God in it is good!
When my heart is overhwhelmed, I can depend on Him. Psalm 61:1-4, KJV: “61 Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer. 2 From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I. 3 For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy.” Psalm 16:18, KJV: “8 I have set the Lord always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.” and Exodus 14:14, KJV: “14 The Lord shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.” It seems so easy for me to be overwhelmed. Do you relate? Every task can be more taxing for us, draining more energy than it does for others. That overwhelmed feeling can easily creep in. Yet, He is enough. Call on Him. I have been amazed at what crying out to Him does as it brings peace!
Our God is an awesome God and dependable. He is here for us. He is not far away. What are you struggling with today? God wants to carry you through. Call out to Him!
