In a recent class in the Beyond Suffering course, I was reminded that the disabled are the largest unreached people group. In the reading, they said it is estimated that only 10% are reached with the gospel. Think about that.
The truth is that these disabled are all around you. Many are hidden from view. It wasn’t until I personally became one of the home-bound that my eyes were opened to the world and culture of being hidden and in need. How can we help them effectively?
There is a great article from Joni and Friends that tells what to avoid in ministry as well as how to have an effective ministry. Their three practical ways to reach out effectively resonate with me. Essentially, 1) change your perspective to think of it as an approach, 2) LISTEN to the needs thinking you understand, 3) realize that we need the disabled and home-bound as much as they need us.
There is tremendous need. I urge you to pray about how God would have you help these dear people and then reach out. How will you help make a difference?
