Monday Meditation

“I am just not fighting hard enough,” I thought over and over again as I continued to fight. For years – decades, I have been fighting to walk better, to exercise, to get stronger and maintain what strength and movement I have. Yet, I seemed to be fighting the same fight over and over with little improvement.

This year, multiple serious health issues earlier in the year caused weakness to return which caused poor walking which caused injuries. I went to my doctor for help. She sent me to a doctor in a specialty with which I was unfamiliar. When I got there, I was struck with their care, concern, and knowledge of my exact situation. They listened to how my medical issues affected me, not just going by what the textbooks tell them. They cared about my independence and mobility and suggested a course of treatment to be started ASAP. I was skeptical, but ready to try whatever they thought may help as it was evident they truly cared and were very knowledgable.

The treatment takes a month to fully take affect. I didn’t expect much the morning after treatment until I put my feet on the floor. I stared at my left foot. I couldn’t believe what I saw.My toes were not curled, a sight I had not seen in over half a century since the first stroke. A few days later, my ankle would bend. A few days later, my knee bent. Then, a few days later, my back straightened up. I could stand up without being bent over. As you can imagine, my walking gait is improving. Every day or two something else improves.

Then, it hit me. I had been trying to do something in my own strength and knowledge that literally could not be done. My body physically could not do what I was trying to do before without outside help. No matter how hard I  Isn’t that like both our salvation and our living the Christian life?

Our salvation from sin is something we cannot accomplish without Jesus. He came to take our punishment for us. We were separated from God due to our sin, but by God’s gift of salvation, we can again have relationship with God.

Ephesians 2:8-10

“8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”
The New King James Version (Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1982), Eph 2:8–10.

We also cannot live this Christian life without His strength and by His divine power. Trying to live in our own strength is futile.

2 Peter 1:3

“3 as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue,” The New King James Version (Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1982), 2 Pe 1:2–3.
