This week, it has hit me several times that disability and chronic illness are my reality, not my identity. Oh, what a joy that is as we walk this difficult journey! My identity is in Christ. Because Jesus Christ is my Savior, I am a child of God.

It can be very easy to see our identity in our health issues. Our reality is daily difficulty, pain, and weakness. Yet, we are loved by the God of the universe. We are unique, fashioned by God with worth. Our identity is in Him. We are loved.

1 John 3:1-3 says, “3 Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. 2 Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. 3 And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.” The New King James Version (Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1982), 1 Jn 3:1–3.
