Thankful Thursday

I am so thankful for our God who cares for us. He takes care of our needs. He loves us.

This morning, I was reading Exodus 21-22. When I came to Exodus 22:21-27, I paused.

“21 Thou shalt neither vex a stranger, nor oppress him: for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt. 22 Ye shall not afflict any widow, or fatherless child. 23 If thou afflict them in any wise, and they cry at all unto me, I will surely hear their cry; 24 And my wrath shall wax hot, and I will kill you with the sword; and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless.
25 If thou lend money to any of my people that is poor by thee, thou shalt not be to him as an usurer, neither shalt thou lay upon him usury. 26 If thou at all take thy neighbour’s raiment to pledge, thou shalt deliver it unto him by that the sun goeth down: 27 For that is his covering only, it is his raiment for his skin: wherein shall he sleep? and it shall come to pass, when he crieth unto me, that I will hear; for I am gracious.”

Do you see what is making God angry? It is people who afflict widows and fatherless children. In the next few verses, God shows that He cares for the widows and for those who are needy. A quick search shows God’s love for the widows and needy.

Psalm 68:5

“5  A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, Is God in his holy habitation.”
The Holy Bible: King James Version, Electronic Edition of the 1900 Authorized Version. (Bellingham, WA: Logos Research Systems, Inc., 2009), Ps 68:5.

James 1:27

“27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.”
The Holy Bible: King James Version, Electronic Edition of the 1900 Authorized Version. (Bellingham, WA: Logos Research Systems, Inc., 2009), Jas 1:27.

There are many more verses on the subject. Now, you may say, I am not a widow or orphan, just disabled. This same God takes care of you. He loves you. The gospels are replete with stories of Jesus showing love and care to those who were outcast and disabled.

You are loved, fiercely loved. You are known personally. What are you thankful for today?
