Monday Meditation

In last week’s Wednesday Walk, I told about a very restrictive restaurant policy. To be honest, I was struggling with it. My brothers explained that since it was a buffet, they are taken advantage of many, many times. It helped. Yet, while absolutely understandable, the restriction is sadly difficult for those of us with significant food allergies.

Exodus 14:14

“14 The Lord shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.”

When I would think about it, God said, “Let me handle it. This is not something for you to carry. I will take care of it.” The verse above was God speaking to the Israelites as they faced huge enemies. Yet, our God loves us and cares about even the little things.

When the time came for our family celebration, I almost didn’t go, but we realized that if I bought a meal, I could go in with the family. We joked about it being the most expensive water I had ever had. I saw it as paying for an outing with my family. Imagine my surprise when the waitress came over concerned as to why I wasn’t eating. I briefly explained the food allergies. She said that she could refund me as it was obvious that I hadn’t eaten at all. What?! At first I declined as my family is important. My being there was not about the food, but about fellowship with loved ones. She insisted. This very kind waitress then helped both my mom and I as we put on our coats and got ready to leave. Seriously. Now, that is our God.

What is my point? Sometimes, the world is unfair. Honor God anyway. Glorify Him in your responses.

When slighted due to our disability or special needs, give it to God. Ask Him what your response should be. There are times we do need to stand up for those who are less fortunate or advocate for our own needs. Yet, we must do this in a way that glorifies Him. We must rest in Him when He says that He will handle it. We must rely on Him to fight for us even when we speak up. As we go into the holidays, we will likely find times when our struggles interfere with plans, when others don’t respond correctly to our needs or say stupid… errr… foolish … things. Let God handle the hurt.
