Daily Dose of Encouragement: Be Vigilant

Sometimes, sin creeps up on us slowly or unknowingly. It creeps up so easily, when we least expect it. This hinders us in our life and in our walk with God.

I had a poignant reminder of this fact this week. My health has improved the past few weeks after a recent new diagnosis allowed us to get more treatment in help. Yet, I still have many health battles. For a moment this week, I forgot and went to do a small task that needed to be done. I started to move a pile of old books to a bag to take to our local mission thrift store. No big deal, right?

Wrong. I am very allergic to dust mites, many papers, and some inks amongst many other things. I know this. But, it was just a quick move of them to a bag. How could that hurt? That was enough to cause a significant allergic reaction. I had to call for help to bag the books. Sigh. I was quickly reminded that to maintain health, I must be vigilant to avoid allergens.

Then, it hit me. Isn’t that how disobedience to God or distraction from our main purpose can come into our lives? Ouch. It was a good reminder to lay aside all sin and weight, to be sober (serious) and vigilant in my Christian walk, my walk with God.

Hebrews 12:1-3

12 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, 2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.

1 Peter 5:8-11

8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: 9 Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. 10 But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you. 11 To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
