Daily Dose of Encouragement: Lonely, Part 2

Have you ever felt as if those around you can not understand what  you go through each day as someone who is home-bound due to health reasons of yourself or others? The journey we are on is very isolating and feels very lonely. Even loved ones are unable to understand and may say things that are hurtful.

We are not alone in the loneliness. Others, for various reasons feel it as well. The Psalmist had also encountered this difficult level of loneliness and pain.

Psalm 38:9-11

“9 Lord, all my desire is before thee; and my groaning is not hid from thee.

10 My heart panteth, my strength faileth me: as for the light of mine eyes, it also is gone from me.

11 My lovers and my friends stand aloof from my sore; and my kinsmen stand afar off.”

It is important to see that the Psalmist acknowledges his loneliness and what it is doing to him. Then, we must look at what he did with this loneliness. The Psalmist went directly to the Lord, expecting Him to help in the time of need.

Psalm 38:15-18, 21-22

“15 For in thee, O Lord, do I hope: thou wilt hear, O Lord my God.

16 For I said, Hear me, lest otherwise they should rejoice over me: when my foot slippeth, they magnify themselves against me.

17 For I am ready to halt, and my sorrow is continually before me.

18 For I will declare mine iniquity; I will be sorry for my sin.

21 Forsake me not, O Lord: O my God, be not far from me.

22 Make haste to help me, O Lord my salvation.”

The Psalmist knew that only God could help him. Loved ones could not help. They did not understand. God could help. The Psalmist was at his wits’ end, so to speak. He went to God, confessed his sins, and asked God for help.

It is so easy to expect others to help relieve the loneliness, but the truth is that they cannot do so. Instead, we must turn to God for help. He is the only One that can comfort and heal the hurt of loneliness. Cry out to Him for help as the Psalmist did. Tell Him the pain you are feeling and trust Him to help. He will.
