Nehemiah was rebuilding the wall around Jerusalem. After his heart was moved by God, he left his job in the king’s court to do this important work for God. The work was not easy with enemies working to thwart their work.
When the road was rough, Nehemiah shows an amazing balance.
“8 And conspired all of them together to come and to fight against Jerusalem, and to hinder it.
9 Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.”
Do you see what they did? They prayed and acted. They knew they could not do the work or fight their enemies without God. They therefore prayed.
Yet, they didn’t just pray and then sit on the sidelines. They prayed and set a watch. They prayed and acted.
If you are like me, I find myself going to one extreme or the other, either trying to do it all in my own strength or not wanting to get up and act because it is too hard. Nehemiah shows us balance. He relied on God and acted.
What a great example for us!
