Tuesday Tip: Traveling

If by chance you are able to travel with a disability or chronic illness, what tips would you share?

This past weekend, my mom and I who both have significant health issues, traveled to my sister’s house. Due to a recent injury, my niece drove us and generally helped all around. Our tips:

  1. Plan, plan, plan. Then, go over your plans again. Do you have appropriate clothing, needed food/snacks, meds, and liquids?
    1. Plan for double the time the trip normally takes. (We squeezed a 3-hour trip into a 6-hour trip. That takes much talent!)
    2. Plan for rest time and recovery time.
    3. Plan for emergencies.
      1. Take a bag of the “use as needed” meds, at least a few of them. This may prevent a trip to urgent care or ER.
      2. Take a full medical list in case it is needed.
  2. Let others know your limitations and what help you need.
  3. Pace yourself carefully.
  4. Realize that you can do everything perfectly and still have a flare up.
  5. Understand that you may not be able to do all the activities that you want to do or that others are doing and that that is okay. 🙂
  6. Then, enjoy. Just enjoy every moment despite your limitations!

We had a wonderful weekend. There were a few hiccoughs along the way, but due to pre-planning, we were able to enjoy as much as we could.

We would love to hear your planning tips!
