Daily Dose of Encouragement: Luke 6:31

Luke 6:31

“31 And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.”

What does this verse have to do with chronic illness, disability, and isolation? How can we practice the golden rule in our situation?

We are often in pain, weak, fatigued, and in a place we don’t want to be. We have to depend on other people for tasks we would prefer to do ourselves. Control of even basic things is taken away. It can make us, well, grumpy, crotchety, and less than loveable. At least, this is what it does to me.

Today’s verse gives Jesus’ teaching to the disciples to do unto others. I believe that we can do this often with the medical personnel and caregivers that we meet on our journey. Even when in pain and tired, we can be pleasant and kind. These dear people are carrying their own burdens. If we can treat them with kindness in the midst of pain, we can show them Jesus by simple kindness and grace. Treat them as you would want to be treated. You may brighten their day!
