Celebrating Jesus: Shepherd

Psalm 23

We looked at this passage in today’s Thankful Thursday. It seemed appropriate to look at Jesus as our Shepherd.

Jesus is the Good Shepherd. What does that mean.

Shepherds feed, protect, care for, guide and love the sheep. They search for them if they are lost, treat them when they are sick, and provide their every need. How does Jesus do that for us?

John 10:11, “11 I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.”

Jesus gave His life for us, in our stead. It goes further.

John 10:27-29, “27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: 28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. 29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.”

Just as sheep know their shepherd’s voice, we who have trusted Jesus Christ as our Savior know His voice. He gives us eternal life. We are in His hand and the Father’s hand. No one can remove us from their hands.

No matter what you are facing today, remember how much the Shepherd loves you and gently cares for you.
