As you know, I had much-needed time away this past week. While there wasn’t a lot of time to simply contemplate, God did use the time away to work in my heart.
I realized that I have allowed some habits to creep in. I can’t say they are necessarily “bad” habits, but not the best habits. My dad used to say that we should never let the good stand in the way of the best. Now that I am home, I will be working to form new habits.
But, what does the Bible say about our habits?
- Romans 6-8: God gives many instructions in these chapters. We no longer walk in sin or need to walk in bad habits.
- 1 Thessalonians 5:21-27: If we follow these admonitions, we will be developing godly habits.
- Colossians 3: I think verses 1 and 2 in this passage set the foundation for building good habits. “3 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. 2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.”
Even in chronic illness and disability God can use us as we develop Biblical and godly habits. I have mentioned the devotional book Daring Devotion. It continues to stir my heart as I read the stories of great Christians past. Many of them suffered from disability and chronic illnesses. Some suffered from depression. Yet, they built their life around serving God.
It was so encouraging to see that despite my weaknesses, God can use me! He is the same God who had helped them!
