Suffering Perspective

Suffering.

Every person has some type of suffering in their lives, some more than others. Chronic illness, disability, and isolation bring their own brand of suffering.

Disappointment and frustration can accompany doctor’s visits, changed plans, and even grief of what we thought would be.

Jesus knew suffering. As the song says, “He left the splendor of heaven knowing His destiny was the lowly hill of Golgotha, there to lay down His life for me.” Jesus chose suffering.

Let’s look at what His Word says about suffering.

  1. 1 Peter 4:12-13
“12 Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: 13 But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.”
  2. Hebrews 5:8-9
“8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;”
  3. 1 Peter 2:20-21
20 For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God. 21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:”

Suffering is inevitable. When it comes, we have an example to follow. Christ’s example gives us perspective. This is something I am still working on. Suffering is hard. By God’s grace, we can follow His example.
