Memories flooded back yesterday. I was once again making a drive to and from the hospital in a nearby city to care for a loved one. A few years ago, we had made that trek frequently, often with tears. While I drove, I sang along with what had become a favorite song during those rough times years earlier:
“I will not be afraid; You are my song in the night.” The lyrics spoke to my heart.
Through the years of disability and chronic illness, God has shown me that He provides “songs in the night” and “praise in the storm.”
Job 35:9-11, KJV: “9 By reason of the multitude of oppressions they make the oppressed to cry: they cry out by reason of the arm of the mighty. 10 But none saith, Where is God my maker, who giveth songs in the night; 11 Who teacheth us more than the beasts of the earth, and maketh us wiser than the fowls of heaven?”
God is there during songs in the night. It is a given. There is no question. They know He is there.
In Psalm 77, the Psalmist tells of his despair and then of the God who is greater than the challenges. He sings songs in the night and remembers God’s greatness. Our God is great. Singing about Him can lift our hearts in the lowest valleys.
Psalm 149:5, KJV: “5 Let the saints be joyful in glory: let them sing aloud upon their beds.”
In the night-time of our lives (literally or figuratively), let’s sing songs to Him! Music is powerful. His songs in the night can change us!
