KJV: 6 Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. 2 Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise; 3 That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth. 4 And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
As we saw in the last part of Ephesians 5, the new life affects every part of our lives. It changes our relationships and family life. This new life is very strange to the world and impossible to do without Christ.
Today’s verses show how children and parents should relate. While there is responsibility on both sides, each is expected to do right on their own. Children obey and honor. Fathers raise children in the Lord’s nurture and admonition.
Notice that there is love in both relationships. Honoring your parents is also the only commandment with promise, promise of things going well and living long. I think this foundation for relationships is important for other relationships as well. No, not the obeying part, but coupling love with proper reactions, keeping God at the center.
The remainder of this chapter will give us not only more insight into the relationships of this new life as well as the source of our strength each day. See you then!
