As my pastor dad would say, “This verse sits down hard and takes up a lot of pew.”
Ephesians 4:29 (KJV): “29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.”
Christians will sometimes state that this means avoiding any form of slang, swearing, or crude. That would be absolutely correct.
However, it goes much further than that. Take a look at the links above. Corrupt can also mean “of poor quality” or “worthless.” This covers a broader scope than simply slang, swearing, or crude talking.
The test for our speech comes in the second half of the verse. Does what you say build up whoever is listening? Does what you say bring grace those listening?
Ouch. This is one of my greatest struggles, especially when I do not feel well. The Bible has much to say about our speech, our tongue. (I think this also goes for “speaking” on social media.) Look at all these verses on our speech.
How can we as isolated believers bring grace to people with our speech? We are new creatures in Christ. God will give us the strength and power to have edifying words. When we do see people, whether medical personnel, family, or friends, work to encourage them. Yes, be honest in answering questions as to how you are doing, but then also speak with edification. This may mean not saying things that you want to in order to edify and build up. Sadly, when we don’t feel well, it is easier to be grumpy and snap at people. Instead, make conscious effort to speak uplifting words.
We have been learning about this new person God is making us into, a person like Jesus. This area of our tongue may be one of the most challenging. Yet, He will help us. He is able to deliver us from a sharp tongue!
What practical help and guidance these verses have. See you tomorrow as we continue this stroll through Ephesians 4:22-32.
