Ephesians 4:14-15

Yesterday, we learned of our amazing assignment in Jesus Christ. Yes, even those of us who are home-bound have an assignment. Today, we see how important our assignment is in the body of Christ, the church, as we look at Ephesians 4:14-15.

KJV: “14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; 15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:”

With these gifts that Jesus gives us, we are able to help each other grow in and more like Christ, be more grounded, wise, and stable (verse 14). Note that this is through the gifts that Jesus gives us for us to be able to carry out these assignments, not in our own strength. My mom shared a story that demonstrates this growing through carrying out these assignments. A dear lady was disabled and used a scooter. When she was able to attend church, the children and teens flocked around her sharing stories and listening as she encouraged them. She was gifted in ministering to the dear younger ones and helping them grow in Christ.

This brings us to verse 15. One reason the younger ones loved this dear lady so much was the way she interacted with them. She spoke the truth in love. They knew she loved them. It is very easy to speak the truth without love. As believers in Christ who long to help build up the church, we must not forget the “in love” part of speaking the truth. Then, we can be part of helping people grow up in Him in all things.

Isn’t it amazing that Jesus Christ can use us to help build His church?
