Today, we will be looking at the final verses of Ephesians 2. What a wonderful journey it has been as we have walked through this chapter.
Today, we finish up by looking at what J. Vernon McGee identifies in his outline as the meaning of the construction of the temple. Let’s dig in…
We looked at verse 19 yesterday and saw that we are no longer on the outside (strangers, foreigners, aliens), but fellowcitizens and members. Woah!
Verse 20 continues to tell us that this household of God (the church) is built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets. The cornerstone of this building is Jesus Christ. For me, this means that the Word of God must be the base and foundation of any church. While Bible studies and other materials are helpful in understanding His Word, we must keep the Bible as the foundation. The cornerstone, central figure, must be Jesus Christ Himself.
While this passage is talking about the church specifically, we are the church. This made me think about my own life. What is the foundation of my days? What is the central focus of my days? Especially in today’s world, it is so easy to get distracted with entertainment at our fingertips. It is so easy to listen to the voices about God’s Word rather than God’s Word. While they are helpful, we must remember what should be the foundation and center of our lives.
Now, we see the really exciting part in verses 21-22. This united building that He is putting together is being made into a holy sanctuary in the Lord, into God’s dwelling in the Spirit. Isn’t that amazing?! I mean, think of it. God is using us, His believers, no matter our health or circumstance to be a holy sanctuary for Himself, a dwelling in the Spirit.
Oh, precious saint. It doesn’t matter that we are isolated, weak, disabled, chronically ill, or caregivers. We are an important part of His church, His body. We can be that holy sanctuary in the Lord, God’s dwelling in the Spirit. Think on that. Ponder that. Ask God to help you fully understand it and see yourself as He does. Ask Him to help you apply it to your every day life. It will change your perspective and world.
