Ephesians 2:14-22, Part 3

Today, we are going to look at a dichotomy in Ephesians 2:14-22. We are going to look at how they were two who became one in Christ as a church. As I write that, my heart rejoices for Christ unites.

These verses remind me of an experience I had as a young adult. I had the great privilege of being invited to an international Bible study/prayer time in a friend’s home. Cultural and language differences paled in comparison to our unity in Christ. That is the type of unity you see in this passage.

My heart rejoices to see what God did and does. His method in constructing His church was in bringing unity through Christ. Let’s walk through these verses (KJV).

  • Verse 15: “for to make in himself of twain one new man” Two are one in Christ as He builds His church. Notice… it is in Christ.
  • Verse 16: “And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:” Notice again… by the cross. This is all through Christ’s work.
  • Verse 17: “And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh.” Peace to both groups!
  • Verse 18: “For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.” Both have access by one Spirit unto the Father through Christ. Access to the Father. That is amazing! Stop. Pause. We have access to the Father through Christ.
  • Verse 19: “Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;” Unity. No strangers or foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints and of the household of God. Does your heart rejoice? For those who believe in God, we are fellowcitizens with the saints and of the household of God! If you do not have that assurance but would like to, please contact us! It is indescribable to think of God and all that He has done in bringing unity in His church.

As we close today, I want to talk about another way that God brings unity outside of Jews and Gentiles. The longer I am isolated and talk with others, the more I realize that there is a separation in the church between the able-bodied and disabled, the home-bound and non-home-bound, or the healthy and chronically ill. We need to realize the unity and purpose God has for each of these groups to bring them together as one group. Each has needs that the other can assist with. God can use each and bring unity. Each set of believers are fellowcitizens in Christ. We will be talking about this more in days to come.

Tomorrow, we will look at the last few verse and the meaning of the construction of this precious temple, Christ’s church.
